Our next extra class event will take you to the magical and joyful world of folk music and dance from Southern Italy. You will discover the rich traditions of “pizzica” and “taranta” and dance to the rhythm of live music performed by Amaraterra, a band formed in London in 2011 by a group of passionate expats from Salento (Puglia). Pizzica is a popular Italian folk dance, originally from Salento, the area located at the southern end of Puglia (Apulia). Pizzica’s timeless roots go back to the Dionysiac festivals and the pagan myth of the tarantula spider, once a common presence in the sun-scorched fields all over the Mediterranean coast. According to popular belief, the “pizzicu” (bite) of the spider induces an altered state of mind that can only be healed by a frenetic dance to the relentless beat of the tambourine, until trance is achieved and the mind liberated. With the passing of the centuries, this shamanic ritual transformed itself into more festive forms that spread to other regions of Southern Italy. Of all those forms, the most famous is undoubtedly the tarantella. The magical origins of pizzica can still be felt: listeners cannot help but join in! Amaraterra will play a selection of pizzica and roots music from all over the South of Italy. Their songs and dances speak of love, happiness, longing and passion in a simple, energetic way that gets its core message through the linguistic barrier by sheer force of rhythm. Join “Italiano & Pizzica”: improve your language skills, experience Italian culture and abandon yourself to the dance that heals! CALL or drop us an email EMAIL and book your place by Friday the 26th of February.

The introduction will be in Italian and teachers will help everybody to understand, providing a short English translation of the main points for the students of lower levels. The dance workshop will be entirely in Italian and is inspired by the language teaching method called “total physical response” according to which instructors give commands to students in the target language, and students respond with whole-body actions. This method will help also students with little or none knowledge of Italian to recognise the meaning of the instructions (steps), to learn new vocabulary, and to get used to the sound of the language. The dance workshop will give Intermediate and Advanced students the opportunity to develop their listening skills and to interact in Italian with students and native-speakers in a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere. The healing power of pizzica will help everybody to set their positive energy free.
